We recognize the importance of being a good corporate citizen and believe responsible community engagement is an integral and essential part of our operations.
MANAGEMENT APPROACHES AND OBJECTIVES
We understood from the stakeholder engagement that our stakeholders have high expectations of our community engagement and public disclosure, and effectiveness of our pollution control and mitigation. To ensure these aspects will be managed in a strategic and systematic manner, and make a real contribution to the community’s development, we have identified the three interconnected pillars below to be our key community management approaches.
Support sustainable development through the implementation of environmental initiatives and other CSR programs, partnering with external organizations and direct donations
Involve our employees in community Involvement and other charity activities
Organize community engagement activities to address the direct and indirect, current and future impacts on our operations
Our Objectives:
Be proactive and transparent in our engagement with the communities
Build community capacity by developing and implementing activities that will create long term and sustainable benefits
Contribute to local environmental sustainability and improvement
Contribute to community development programs through appropriate participation and support by our employees
Help our employees to grow with the company and support the communities through people development programs and volunteering activities
Our Guiding Principles:
Based on the above guiding principles, we have confirmed four focus areas for our work plan:
Community engagement and dialogue;
Employees’ involvement in CSR and volunteering activities;
Support for sustainability and environmental initiatives; and
Collaboration with the community on CSR and other sustainability initiatives.
OUR IMPACTS
Our Impacts to the Community
Considering the impacts from extraction and consumption of natural resources, we strive to fully utilize all materials in a responsible manner. To maintain good neighbor practices for the communities where we operate, we put much effort in particular to emission control and traffic safety. Due to the nature and scale of our operations, we also implemented other safety measures to ensure the health and safety of our employees and our contractors. Although our stakeholders didn’t consider charity and volunteering material to our business, under our vision of “growing with Hong Kong”, we see philanthropy and support for vulnerable groups an important part of our sustainability journey. While competing for talent is one of our sustainability strategies, we thus aim to support the development of our youth.
ACTIVITIES IN OUR COMMUNITY
GOOD NEIGHBOR PRACTICES
To protect our neighbors, we upgraded the pollution control measures in our concrete batching plants, launching the Traffic Safety Program, arranging parking lots to prevent queuing of mixer trucks in the neighborhood.

CARE FOR CHILDREN & THE ELDERLY
Since 2014, our volunteers visit different elderly homes under United Christian Nethersole Community Health Service (UCN) every year to show our care for our seniors. We were pleased to see that our seniors enjoyed the special Christmas fun and companionship of the energetic Alliance team.
In November 2018, Alliance and Paul Y. Engineering Group joined hands to organize a Dream-Come-True Tour to Hong Kong International Airport for the children from The Hub Hong Kong. The Hub is a children’s support centre in Sham Shui Po which provides educational support and other social services to those in need. With the purpose to help the children broaden their horizons, develop career goals, teamwork and social skills, the tour included a visit to the Dream Come True Education Park, introduction of the airport and a visit to Aviation Discovery Centre.
DEVELOP OUR YOUNGER GENERATION
Alliance has offered a summer internship program for college students since 2010. During the two-month internship, the participants guided by lecturers and supervising managers had on-the-job training in different business lines. The practical work experience helped them to prepare themselves for future employment. We have also provided scholarships to higher education institution students, so that our younger generation could understand better the construction material industry in Hong Kong. Besides, we were also active in sharing industrial knowledge with local universities and other institutions, driving the development of the industry.
SUPPORT VULNERABLE GROUPS
We care about the vulnerable groups and always encourage our employees to participate in different CSR activities. In November 2018, Alliance formed 2 teams to participate in The Salvation Army Orienteering and became the corporate sponsor again to support the children with special educational needs. We also joined the UNICEF Charity Run 2018, the largest road-running charity event in Hong Kong in the same month. The funds raised were used to support UNICEF’s children support projects, especially the global AIDS campaigns. As a long-term supporting organization of Caritas, we also sent volunteers to support their social services, such as the annual Caritas Charity Bazaars 2018.
SUPPORT TO EMPLOYEES
Being a “10 Years Plus Caring Company”, we care for our employee by offering different welfare and supporting programs. These programs included company outings and other social activities, free vaccination and annual health check to protect their health, the Automated External Defibrillator Training on sudden cardiac arrest and other first-aid treatment methods, as well as special support to our retirees. With our continuous effort in building a happy workplace culture, Alliance was awarded the “Happy Company” label in 2018.
WAY FORWARD
In terms of community relations, we strive to be a company who is welcomed by all the communities. Our operations will be guided by strong moral and ethical standards in daily interactions with our neighbors and all the affected parties.
To ensure our CSR and community engagement objectives can be met, we have already formed a CSR and Community Engagement Committee in 2019. The Committee will be responsible for the strategic planning of all CSR and community engagement initiatives in the future. There will also be policy and programs to facilitate more employee participation. With clear objectives and timetable, we are confident in building lasting relationships with the community and our many stakeholders in order that we become a well-recognized member of the communities where we locate.
