INNOVATION

Transforming challenges into opportunities
At Alliance, Innovation means having the ability to continuously transform challenges into opportunities and develop advanced solutions. We always challenge ourselves to do our job better and smarter.

Our market analysis showed that new innovations such as AI, automation and big data have helped businesses of all sizes improve productivity and efficiency. Many of our stakeholders also considered these new technologies important elements to be included on our sustainability priorities list. Besides the need to improve business performance, we are taking on the challenge of climate protection by accelerating our innovation related activities. To drive our responsible growth, we have developed innovation strategies to address climate protection while also helping us contribute to a Circular Economy.

OUR RECENT
INNOVATIONS

1.
New/Improved Products
with Sustainable Benefits
All our products are aimed to help our customers overcome the increasing challenges in the construction industry while contributing to sustainable development.
Self-Compacting Concrete, are tailored products with the advantages of high passing ability, resistance to segregation, reasonable stiffening time and less labour, all of which enhance construction efficiency and ease the labour shortage problem of the sector for the long run.

By using GGBFS and PFA which are industrial waste or by product as supplementary cementitious materials in concrete production, we added some green innovation components to our customers’ projects and significantly lowered their carbon footprint. While the improved durability performance of these GGBS and PFA concrete mixes can further prolong our product life which in turn minimize associated maintenance works and costs.

Our green solution also includes Fair-faced Concrete, which can simplify the construction process, avoid additional finishing materials and their associated costs and waste, as well as the long-term maintenance.

We also provide total solutions to customers help tackling their problems such as the application of Long Pumping Concrete in Shatin Central Link cross harbour tunnel. The long pumping concrete was a sustainable solution which minimized the generation of exhaust gas from delivery trucks inside the confined space thus mitigated the health hazard to the workers.

When knowing that one of our customers had difficulties in their Sludge Treatment Process and would like to reduce the waste disposal to landfill, we introduced a new material from oversea for replacing the cementitious materials being used in the process. This newly introduced material also generated benefits of improved the sludge treatment efficiency, use less materials and in turn reduced the waste volume to landfill.
2.
Turning Concrete Waste
into Recycled Aggregates
Our Recycle Concrete Treatment Process
Collect wet concrete waste from construction site
Recycle concrete treatment process
Coarse aggregates
Use in
construction work directly
Concrete production for non-structural construction works
Every day there are tons of concrete waste from construction sites all over Hong Kong, which unfortunately will be sent to our landfills. To reduce the waste, we have introduced an innovative Recycle Concrete Treatment Machine to recycle the wet concrete. It can transform the concrete into recycled aggregates, and then reused as civil work materials for construction projects. Alternatively, they can replace traditional aggregates in concrete production. This new innovation not only helps ease the burden on the existing landfills, it is a big step forward in our journey to promote green construction material in Hong Kong.
3.
Upgrading Operation System
and Process
Innovation as a key driver for business development, has been applied in different operational processes, such as production and sales & marketing. In 2018, we launched the first Automated Aggregate Supply System in Hong Kong. Using the RFID technologies, the new system connects our depots and concrete plants so they can control the dispatching and unloading automatically. As a result, manpower and human errors can be reduced while the efficiency and consistency are maximised. Besides, we have launched the specially designed hopper and control system to reduce the batching time per truck and increase the productivity. Another highlight was the fully automated temperature calculating system. It can replace all manual work by setting an optimized target concrete temperate with one simple step.

For sales & marketing, we began a new initiative that stands out in this ever-evolving market. By embedding a scientific approach to marketing, we can understand the market and customers better through scientific analysis, systematic planning and consistent processes.
4.
New Workplace
Improvement Project
To improve our workplace, a new project team with representatives from Operations, Risk Management, IT and Engineering and Maintenance was formed in 2018. The team focuses on exploring new technologies to eliminate hazardous manual work, such as removing concrete build-up in confined spaces. Other innovations that can enhance operating procedures include dry ice blasting for cleaning of production equipment, an ultra-sonic technologies for removing concrete build-up, which are currently under study. All the above improvements aimed to upgrade our workplace health and safety standards which are important for our employee retention and overall performance.

WAY FORWARD

We believe putting innovation in practice will benefit the company in numerous ways, for example as we accelerate our climate protection activities, introduction of renewable energy to our operations, replacement of fossil fuel for our truck fleet, new program to achieve carbon neutrality, we move closer to achieving our strategy. We will also aim to create a harm free workplace through safety by design and automation, eliminate hazardous manual handling works. For products and services, we will continue to invest in innovation and sustainability, such as developing new recycling processes and explore more applications for recycled materials. All these will be key components of enabling a Circular Economy.
